Pyeongchang South Korea us the official location of the 2018 Winter Olympics. The Games will be held February 9-25, 2018. The last time the Olympics were held in SOuth Korea was the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul. Pyeongchang launched bids to host the games in 2010 and 2014, but lost out in the third and fourth rounds of bids. Pyeongchang finally secured a position as host city for the 2018, beating out Munich, Germany and Annecy, France with the bids placed as 63-25-7 respectively. Preparations began with the inaugural assembly on October 19, 2011. The Organization Committee, headed by Kim Jin-Sun, immediately began to put together a master plan and design the venue. By the time the International Olympic Committee (IOC) made their first visit in March 2012, the Olympic Village was already under construction. Construction on a high speed railway to connect Pyeongchang to Seoul began that June. Former IOC President Jacque Rogge visited Pyeongchang for the first time in February 2013, and the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games were hosted in Pyeongchang.

The six applicant cities for the 2022 Winter Olympics were announced by the IOC on November 15, 2013. Stockholm, Sweden canceled their bid due to lack of political support leaving five cities in the running to the 2022 host city:
